May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to prioritize your skin health and prevention habits. While many people focus on skincare for cosmetic reasons, protecting your skin goes far beyond appearance. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, yet it is also one of the most preventable with the right daily habits and early detection.


The primary cause of skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which comes from both the sun and tanning beds. Even minimal, repeated sun exposure accumulates over time, leading to sun damage, hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and in more serious cases, precancerous lesions like actinic keratosis. This is why consistent sun protection is essential—not just during summer, but all year long.


One of the most effective ways to protect your skin is by using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily, such as the Colorescience SPF line available in our office. Sunscreen should be applied every morning and reapplied every two hours when outdoors. Additional protective measures—like wearing wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and avoiding peak sun hours between 10 AM and 4 PM—can significantly reduce UV exposure. These simple but powerful habits not only help prevent skin cancer but also preserve your skin’s youthful, healthy appearance.


Awareness and early detection are equally important. Be proactive by monitoring your skin for any changes, including new or evolving moles, rough or scaly patches, or spots that do not heal properly. Regular self-checks, along with professional skin evaluations, are key to identifying concerns early—when they are most treatable. If anything appears suspicious, a dermatology evaluation is always recommended for proper diagnosis.
